Ribs In The Crock Pot

I made ribs in the crock pot today and they were amazing! I personally prefer boneless ribs but this would work with bone-in ribs as well... beef or pork.

Crock Pot BBQ Ribs

3 lbs. pork ribs
Hickory Smoked Salt (or salt, pepper and liquid smoke) to taste
1 onion, sliced
1 (16 oz.) bottle barbeque sauce

Sprinkle ribs with Hickory Smoked Salt. Place ribs in broiler pan under broiler for 15 minutes to brown and remove excess fat. Put sliced onion in crock pot. Slice ribs into serving pieces and put in crock pot. Pour in barbeque sauce. Cover and cook on low 8-10 hours or on high 4-5 hours.

I love ribs when we go out but never make them at home. What cut of rib did you use. I've seen things labeled "Ribs" "Country Ribs" "Short Ribs" etc and I have no idea what the difference is. . .

Jenn, what you want to look for is Country Ribs or Boneless Spare Ribs. Short Ribs are ribs cut the opposite way so that there are "slices" of bone in each piece. They are good but if you are looking for restaurant style those are not what you want. When you make ribs in the crock pot they will be very tender and falling apart when you take them out, they just melt in your mouth!

This recipe sounds so incredibly easy. Unfortunately, I don't own a crockpot, but would love to purchase one. Any suggestions about brands and prices? Thanks!

Sara- it is the easiest way to make ribs that I have found.

Susan, it is very easy! I have a Rival crock pot and I absolutly love it! I have a link to their clearence center, I took it down as I have been making a few changes on the blog here but I will put it back up for you. Excellent prices on there!

Michele,

This is SO wrong on so many levels.
These may be ribs in BBQ sauce, but they are not BBQ ribs! I've got so much to teach you. :-)

Here's one way of making ribs.

Robert, LOL! Please don't spank my hand! I promise to read your blog post and when I get a grill I will make them the correct way... but when I get a craving for ribs I have to improvise :) You are the "Grill Master" so I promise I'll stop by for proper instructions when the time comes ;)

Susan-Make sure whatever crockpot you buy that it has a REMOVABLE LINER. I had an old one of my mom's where the liner was attached and I dreaded cleaning the thing. I think most of the major brand name ones these days are removable, but just something to check before you buy. . .

Thanks Michele. I've seen that Rival Crockpot in quite a few stores and the price is very reasonable so I may just finally break down and buy one.

Michele,

Very funny to see this because I have been thinking about making Ribs in my crockpot this weekend for the superbowl. I was somewhat concerned that the ribs would be too moist and would come apart too quickly. I was also wondering whether u used baby back or St. Louis cut ribs and if you thought one would be preferable to the other.

Jared, the ribs always turn out great! I use beef ribs... not sure of the cut. I would suggest a small rib and the minimal cooking time if you want them to hold up really well and not fall off the bone.
